Post by Captain Raymond Waugh Fri Aug 12, 2011 3:22 pm

The day was a rather bleak one; it was neither raining nor windy and it simply just grey and a tad bit cold. Raymond slightly limped down the streets of Wiltown, heading towards the pharmacy in which he frequently visited, being the nearest to his home. He was having quite the headache and needed something to help put it to sleep as he had ran out of all sorts of medicines and tablets at home in which would help. His wife, Susan, had offered to go to the pharmacy for him but he had declined her proposal as it would show that he was too weak to do something for himself. His son was luckily in the nursery with one of the servants so Raymond didn’t have to worry about bringing the little bugger along with him. Raymond was rather joyous when he had gotten out of the cool temperature and the bland look of the outdoors, he had entered the pharmacy.

He spoke with the owners quite some time asking them all sorts of things about the medicines and such in which would help with his migraine- possibly induced by the stress in which he was having from having to find a surgeon. Of course medicine wasn’t the only thing he spoke to the owners about as he wasn’t the shyest bloke in Longren, he even had a good warm laugh with them every now and then.

After a while he decided to speak up, as they seemed kind and reliable, and ask if them if they knew anyone who would be qualified to be a doctor within a ship.

His left eye moved to face a completely different direction while his right eye bore a gentle stare at the couple in front of him. The captain inquired, “Sorry for troubling you as I know you you’re both busy people, but do you know any person in Longren who’d be experienced enough to be a surgeon on a ship?”

It was a cold outside, the sky was grey and the very prospect of no sunshine made Charles was grimace as he pulled his black cloak around his shivering body. Charles sat slumped in a wooden chair, hunched forwards against his desk by the window overlooking the small garden of the pharmacy, where they grew some of their ingredients. His eyes studied the yellowed diagrams of the human body, trailing over the bosom towards the neckline and up towards the frame of the skull. Deep in concentration, he sat there, mumbling to himself. A few hours prior, he returned from a rich family’s home and though he did not admit it, he could not seem to find the source of their daughter’s illness. It was unusual as his prescribed medication did not cure her ailment as it had many others and now, her condition worsened. Frustrated, the doctor leaned back in his seat and sighed, gripping his jaw firmly. He glanced upwards towards the blue birds chirping and bouncing along the fence through the glass.

Through the walls, he could hear voices belonging to his older sister and her husband tending to customers of the pharmacy and when it seemed to have quieted down, another voice echoed through the walls. It was a rough, deep voice but it seemed to belong to someone charming as it had made the couple laugh.

“Sorry for troubling you as I know you you’re both busy people, but do you know any person in Longren who’d be experienced enough to be a surgeon on a ship?” asked the stranger’s voice.

Charles returned to stare at the diagrams, he was a physician but he was knowledgeable enough in the human body to understand the duties of a surgeon, especially of one in the army where amputations and removing bullets were common. Charles scoffed at the very thought as trailing a finger along the paper human’s bony ribcage.

His sister’s voice came through the wall, “If you wait just one moment please, sir, my husband will bring my brother, who is a physician, in. I’m certain he can help you more than we can.”

The sounds of heavy feat against wood followed and the door swung open to reveal his sister’s husband, “Charles, we have a visitor. He says he’s looking for a surgeon, do you think you can come over and help us?”

Charles gave one last glance at his papers before rising to his feet, “Certainly.” He pulled his cloak off his shoulders and set it against his chair, it was the beginning of August and though he was cold, he would look almost barking mad with it on. Straightening his glasses, he followed his sister’s husband through the door to the front of the pharmacy where his sister stood with the customer at the counter.

“Well,” Charles began, looking at the stranger, “I hear you are searching for a surgeon, is that correct? You’ve come to the right place, I know a few men who may be willing to embark on a journey across the sea.” He glanced at his sister and her husband, almost accusingly, as he spoke, “How about you follow me into the back room? You can tell me all about this where in privacy.” Though the room was empty with only his relatives and the stranger, Charles thought it would be more appropriate to sit him down and offer him some tea.

There was an exchange of conversation between the wife and the husband; the man’s spouse had asked him to get her brother – who was luckily a physician. Raymond thought again of how blessed he was and especially for the fact that his two year old son wasn’t with him to bother him, jumping and screaming and pointing… Raymond thanked the woman, and then he waited. Soon the woman’s husband and brother arrived; it wasn’t a long wait as his thoughts were cut short. The young man was lanky, his hair was brown, and he wore glasses. To Raymond, who was never the sort who read books, the younger man before him looked to be the stereotypical doctor. But Raymond wasn’t going to judge him; he was going to hear him speak as to learn what he was capable of, see what and who he knew. He trusted the pharmacist and his wife but one could never be too certain.

Raymond let the man speak; he told him that he had come to the right place and that he knew some men who were just possibly what Raymond was looking for. Then not long after came an invitation to the back room. Raymond didn’t think it an awful idea to speak in private, there they could get more into detail and besides what was to be discussed was only for them two as the other two had shown obvious signs of wishing for the young man to take over what they couldn’t. Raymond nodded then responded saying, “Of course. Sounds like an excellent idea!”

Raymond limped as he followed the medical man, stopping once to catch his breath as he was still recovering. He was brought into a room that was quite empty; there was a table and one chair, a chair by the window, a bookshelf filled from top to bottom with books, as well as several other tables riddled with medical things in which Raymond was certain that he wouldn’t understand even if he gave the papers long stares. Raymond decided to bring up what he was so thrilled for, “So, you do know knowledgeable men who are willing to go to sea? Is there any way I could get in contact with any of them?”
